MY CHURCH + GO!
In Acts 19:8–10, the Apostle Paul establishes a missionary training hub that trained and sent disciples so that all of Asia Minor—estimated at 1–5 million people—heard the gospel in just two years. GO! functions like a modern-day micro “School of Tyrannus” within your church: an outreach ministry program operating under, in, and for the benefit of your local body. Through GO!, individuals in your congregation gather in a small-group context to learn how to impact, reach, and make disciples in their everyday lives. GO! Groups follow an action-learning cycle where participants:
Watch brief videos
Learn through Scripture and workbook exercises
Complete a small step of action based on what they learned
Grow in their walk with Jesus as they process these steps of grace-fueled obedience together
HOW WOULD GO! EQUIP THE PEOPLE IN MY CHURCH TO IMPACT, REACH, AND MAKE DISCIPLES?
Rooted in Scripture, GO! follows the sending pattern of the New Testament, rooted in how Jesus taught his disciples to impact, reach, and make disciples in Luke 10.1-11.
GO! equips the members of your church through:
Prep 1: God’s Mission – Discover God’s mission through Scripture
Prep 2: My Purpose – Discovering the person or people Jesus is sending them to
Prep 3: Find a Friend – Invite a friend or teammate along to join them as they go (Jesus sends in pairs)
Practice 1: GO! Together – Being prepared as a pair or team
Practice 2: Pray Together – Learning to intercede for their person or people Jesus has called them to
Practice 3: Discover Practical Needs – Discover the practical needs of the person or people Jesus has called them to
Practice 4: Love in Action – Meet the practical needs for their person or people
Practice 5: Discover their Story –Understanding the intangible needs in their lives and the gods they worship
Practice 6: Speak of Jesus – Share the gospel with their person or people
Practice 7: A Flourishing Community – Live available to Jesus in impacting, reaching, discipling, and sending others for the rest of their lives
WHAT HAS INFLUENCED AND INFORMED THE GO! TRAINING CONTENT?
- The GO! training content holds to a historic faith grounded in Scripture that holds to a reformed tradition where groups learn to be sent based on the New Testament pattern, which is rooted in Jesus sending his disciples.
- The GO! training content has been influenced by the global Church in areas where exponential growth is happening through disciple-making movement principles. Other thought leaders include Tim Keller, John Piper, Alan Hirsch, and Lesslie Newbigin.
- The GO! training material has been collaboratively developed in local churches through contextualization, testing, and multiple iterations of refinement over the past 25 years in the Middle Atlantic region.
- The GO! content does not speak to the specific ways in which aspects of worship are to be practiced beyond creedal Christianity. Therefore, it is adaptable to a range of traditions within a historic faith so that churches can encourage the practice of certain sacraments, spiritual disciplines or doctrines based on their varying views of “secondary” doctrinal distinctives. For example-songs chosen for worship, how baptism is performed, how the Lord’s supper is participated in, views on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, etc… GO! does NOT partner with churches that have a diminished view of the authority of Scripture and in so doing have redefined human sexuality or the value of life or deviated from any primary doctrines within a historic Christian faith.
- GO! is a trademarked product of Estuary, a 501C3 parachurch ministry that was commissioned from Downtown Hope Church in Annapolis, Maryland.
HOW WOULD GO! BENEFIT MY CHURCH?
- Members Activated – The members of your church will be trained with a biblical mindset and ways to practically impact, reach, and make new disciples in their everyday lives.
- Spiritual Renewal – Your church will be renewed spiritually as people pray boldly and live out their faith in fresh and creative ways.
- Faith Renewal – Your church’s faith will grow through stories of ordinary people stepping out in faith to impact, reach, and make disciples.
- Your Church will Grow Numerically – While this will take some time, as people in your church impact, reach, and make new disciples beyond your walls, they will bring them back to become members at your church.
HOW WOULD GO! RUN WITHIN MY CHURCH?
Think of GO! like a CrossFit gym in your church that allows people in your congregation to get trained and be commissioned by your church to impact, reach, and form new disciples in their everyday lives. It is a slow and steady way to shape a culture of mission and disciple-making in your church.
- Who leads GO! in a local church? GO! is led by GO! Guides—qualified leaders identified and commissioned by the local church leadership to facilitate the program with members of their own congregation. From the very beginning, GO! Guides are supported by a dedicated GO! Missionary.
- Who do GO! Guides (facilitators/leaders) report to? GO! operates under the oversight of your church. GO! Guides, being members of your church, report to the existing leadership structure in your church. The GO! Missionary and central team provide ongoing resources, training, encouragement, and support.
- Who participates? Members of your church who you want to see reach the lost and make disciples in their everyday lives
- How much time will it cost the Pastor? As much or as little as you want. The Pastor or Point of Contact can simply be kept in the loop with how things are progressing from the GO! Missionary or can fully participate.
- Will it distract from our existing programs? No, GO! can fit seamlessly into your existing array of ministry programs. Think of GO! as a way of outsourcing your local outreach, evangelism, and disciple-making in one program that supplements your existing discipleship and formation pathways.
- How does support work? A devoted GO! Missionary is available to support the GO! Guides (Facilitator/leader) in your church and update the pastor or the Elder team on progress.
- What should we call it? We recommend calling it by the name of your church plus “GO!”. For example, “Downtown Hope GO!”
- Can the content be adapted for a particular context or tradition? Reach out to our team at hello!@estuary.org to explore how this would work.
HOW WOULD GO! GET STARTED IN MY CHURCH?
After we meet with your leadership and your church is willing to implement GO!, our team walks with you through a simple process:
- Interest Call with you and 1 aspiring leader who you think would be interested in GO! The aspiring leader needs to be someone who is a committed church member and has a vision for helping their group or others do outreach, mission, or evangelism. The leader can be someone who is currently leading a small group or has a desire to start a group or ministry focused on mission under the oversight of your church.
- Training – After they commit to run GO!, one of our GO! Missionary coaches will equip them to facilitate GO! in their group. GO! can be run in 3-week sessions or in a 12-week semester format. The goal is for GO! to be implemented through an existing small group, outreach group, or Sunday School class at your church.
- Starting GO! – After the training, your leader will lead their group through GO! in your church.
- Ongoing Coaching and Support – Your church will have an assigned GO! Missionary coach who is committed to assisting you in achieving your goals related to your members fulfilling the Great Commission through mission, outreach, and evangelism.
WHAT DOES A GO! PARTNERSHIP ENTAIL OR COST?
Our desire as a team of local missionaries is to build a long-term relationship with you and your church. Like so many of Jesus’ parables, GO! starts small and slow, but the fruit the Lord grows and the lives it impacts are great. The idea is for everyone in your church to participate in GO! over time to help shape a culture of disciples impacting, reaching, and making new disciples within their everyday lives over the years and decades. Here are the details of a partnership should you and your church decide to continue beyond the pilot:
- GO! commits to serving you and your leadership by establishing and sustaining GO! in your church to equip people in your church to impact, reach, and make disciples in their everyday lives for 2-5 years.
- Your church commits to adopting GO! as one of the local outreach missions organizations that your church supports financially through your local missions fund.
